About

SOul ZOne is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, operating with accountability to its board of directors. While we are located near campus, we are not funded in any way by Carleton College. Gary is an ordained pastor, and continues to meet regularly for accountability with pastors in the Evangelical Free Church in southern Minnesota.

People often ask, "Why focus on this small college in the Midwest?" Here are a few reasons:

  • Carleton is ranked in the top 10 liberal arts colleges.
  • The school has the highest number of National Merit Scholars in the incoming class.
  • It also has the highest proportion of grads who get Ph.D.’s in math and the sciences.
  • Carleton has global influence: Students from 30 other countries come here.

Our philosophy is to come alongside student leaders and help them lead rather than trying to build groups under the name of SOul ZOne. On a typical day, you'll find us meeting with individual student-leaders to pray and plan for their upcoming roles as group leaders. We also meet with students to provide personal mentoring/coaching.

A few times each term, we offer special events such as coffeehouses and seminars. The welcome-back coffeehouse early in the term gives students a chance to share their photos from studies abroad and mission trips. Occasional seminars let us dig deeper on subjects of interest to students.

After 10 years of full-time campus ministry, we are in touch with alums all over the world. When we travel, we enjoy visiting with those who live in the areas we are visiting.
